A French perfume wafts across Beverley with this déjeuner programme of favourites and hidden gems. Fauré’s Elegie explores the romantic melancholy of the cello, and Poulenc’s oboe sonata – the last piece he wrote – exploits the haunting quality of the instrument. Meanwhile, beautiful songs by Fauré (including his popular Après un rêve) and Hahn delight and tease. Duruflé’s little-known Prélude, récitatif et variations (flute, viola and piano) is so influenced by the organ music heard elsewhere in the festival, and is beautifully evocative.
