- Schubert: Winterreise
Schubert is often considered to be the father of the lieder repertoire, and Winterreise one of his crowning achievements. The 24 songs form a powerful exploration of a man's grief for his lost love, and a vivid depiction of his bleak and lonely winter's journey. When Schubert's friends first heard these songs, they were perplexed by the relentless negativity of text and music alike, but Schubert simply stated, “I like these songs more than all the others, and you will come to like them also”. Full of pictorial character and poignant beauty, these settings of Müller's rich poetry have certainly seen his prediction borne out in the 200 years since.
